Andrew Hickey is Professor of Communications in the School of Humanities and Communication at the University of Southern Queensland, where he leads the Youth Community Futures research program. His scholarship examines relational pedagogy, youth studies, and community engagement through critical pedagogical frameworks.
Hickey's research employs ethnography and discourse analysis to investigate education policy, teacher identity, and informal learning spaces. Funded projects include Queensland Government studies on youth engagement and school-community partnerships.
Publications advance relational pedagogy theory through studies of classroom practice, teacher agency, and policy reform. Recent work analyzes media representations of youth and develops comfort-based pedagogical approaches for challenging learning environments. Hickey received multiple awards including the 2023 Sustainable Communities Award and 2024 Excellence in Community Engagement Award.
