Dr. Andrew Connell is a Professor of Ethnomusicology at the School of Music, James Madison University. His research focuses on Brazilian popular instrumental music, exploring themes of identity and musical globalization. He holds degrees including a B.M. from San Jose State University, M.M. and M.A. from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. from UCLA.

Research Interests: Dr. Connell investigates the intersection of Brazilian music with global cultural dynamics, particularly through the lens of chorinho (a Brazilian instrumental genre) and jazz. His work examines how musical practices reflect and construct cultural identity. Recent scholarly outputs include contributions to Music Cultures of Latin America: Global Effects and Women and Music in America Since 1900, alongside a forthcoming book on Brazilian jazz.
Teaching & Performance: At JMU, he teaches courses on American music, jazz history, and world music, while coaching jazz ensembles. As a performer, he specializes in saxophone and clarinet, collaborating with renowned artists like Luciano Pavarotti and Hermeto Pascoal. He has performed at festivals such as Monterey Jazz Festival and the Spoleto Festival USA, and has recorded with labels including Acoustic Levitation and Earthbeat! Traveler.
