About
Andrew C. Thompson serves as Senior Tutor at Queens' College, University of Cambridge, and is a Newton Trust affiliated lecturer in the Faculty of History. Appointed Senior Tutor in March 2021, he holds overall responsibility for academic and welfare provision within the college, with a vision to build a community that is open, outward-looking, and sustainable.
Dr. Thompson supervises history students across multiple levels, emphasizing the importance of feedback to help students make good progress. Within the Faculty of History, he lectures for Part I courses covering British political history (1688-1886) and European history (1715-1890), supervises part II dissertations, and contributes to MPhil options on eighteenth-century history. He currently supervises six PhD students.
His research focuses on eighteenth-century history, with particular expertise in the Hanoverian monarchy, European states system, and religious dissent. He authored the first biography of George II to make extensive use of British and German archival materials and is currently editing a companion to Dissent in the long eighteenth century.
Dr. Thompson encourages potential history applicants to read broadly and engage with historical resources, believing students should see themselves as active learners and critical participants in the learning process.
