Prof. Dr. Andreas Ranft is a Senior Professor of Medieval History at the Institute of History, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. He has served as Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy I (2003-2011) and leads major research projects including the DFG-funded Index Librorum Civitatum and Klosterbuch Sachsen-Anhalt.
He studied history, law, philosophy and political science, earning his doctorate in 1983 on Lüneburg's municipal finances and habilitation in 1992 on aristocratic societies. His research focuses on the social and cultural history of the late Middle Ages, particularly urban and administrative history.
Dr. Ranft has held visiting professorships at Humboldt University Berlin, University of Greifswald, and University of Cologne. He has served as expert reviewer for the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, VW Foundation, and DFG review board member (2012-2020). He co-founded the European Romanesque Center and chairs the Dietrich Moderhack Foundation.
