Dr. Andreas Kannen is a Research Scientist at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) in the Department of Human Dimensions of Coastal Areas since May 2007. His research focuses on institutional and social assessments of environmental and economic changes in coastal regions, emphasizing marine use patterns, offshore wind farming, Marine Spatial Planning (MSP), and marine governance. He holds a PhD in Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) from Kiel University (2000) and has extensive experience in coastal research, including roles at the Research and Technology Centre Westcoast (1996–2007) and prior consulting work.
Key research interests include scale dynamics (temporal/spatial), cross-sectoral and cross-border collaboration challenges, and transnational spatial planning frameworks. Dr. Kannen leads national/international projects and chairs the ICES Working Group on Marine Planning and Coastal Zone Management (WGMPCZM) since 2010, co-chairing workshops on MSP quality assurance and cultural ecosystem services.
Labs/Teams: Active within the Human Dimensions of Coastal Areas research group at HZG, collaborating on coastal sustainability and maritime industry evolution.
