Andreas Goldthau is a Visiting Professor at the EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies Department of the College of Europe’s Bruges campus. He concurrently serves as Director of the Willy Brandt School and Franz Haniel Professor for Public Policy at the University of Erfurt’s Faculty of Economics, Law and Social Sciences. He leads the Research Group on Energy, Climate, and Sustainability Governance at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) in Potsdam. Previously, he held professorial roles at Royal Holloway College (University of London), Central European University, Johns Hopkins University, and Harvard Kennedy School.
His research focuses on energy security, global energy governance, and the political economy of the low-carbon transition. Key publications include analyses of shale gas politics in Eastern Europe, EU energy regulatory frameworks, and the intersection of energy policy with climate change and development goals. Goldthau is a Marie Curie Senior Fellow and holds non-resident fellowships with the Payne Institute, Global Public Policy Institute, and DGAP. His work bridges international relations, political economy, and comparative public policy.
He advises governments and international organizations on energy strategy and sustainability governance. Recent projects include evaluating the geopolitical implications of renewable energy transitions and analyzing the role of EU energy diplomacy in global climate negotiations.
