Prof. Dr. Andreas Fuchs is a Professor of Development Economics and Global Political Economy at the University of Göttingen and a researcher at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. He serves as Director of the Centre for Modern East Asian Studies (CeMEAS), the Ibero-America Institute for Economic Research, and the Kiel Institute China Initiative. His research focuses on trade, investment, and development policies using quantitative methods, with a regional emphasis on China and emerging economies. He also investigates the political economy of natural disasters, humanitarian crises, and non-militarized conflicts.
Prof. Fuchs holds a PhD from the University of Göttingen (2012), with master’s degrees from Goethe University Frankfurt and Université Paris-Dauphine. He previously served as Professor at Helmut Schmidt University Hamburg (2018–2019), Senior Researcher at Heidelberg University (2013–2018), and Postdoctoral Fellow at Princeton University (2012–2013). He has consulted for the Bertelsmann Foundation, European Commission, and OECD.
His research interests include Development Finance, International Organizations, and regional dynamics in Asia and Latin America. He leads projects funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, exploring innovative data sources like satellite imagery and machine learning to analyze authoritarian states' impact on global development.
Prof. Fuchs is affiliated with AidData (since 2012), the German Economic Association’s Development Economics Committee (since 2017), and the European Development Network (EUDN). His work appears in top journals such as the Journal of the European Economic Association and Journal of Development Economics.
