Andrea Gingerich

Dr. Andrea Gingerich is an Associate Professor at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), affiliated with the Division of Medical Sciences and the Northern Medical Program. She also holds positions at the UBC Centre for Health Education Scholarship and the UBC Department of Family Practice, Northern Rural Program. Her research focuses on variability in clinical judgment, assessment methodologies, and clinical supervision in healthcare education.

• Educations: PhD in Health Professions Education (Maastricht University), MMEd in Medical Education (Dundee University), ND in Naturopathic Medicine (Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine), BSc in Physiology/Psychology (University of Western Ontario).
• Roles: CBL Lead at the Northern Medical Program, clinical supervisor, and graduate supervisor for MSc/PhD Health Sciences students.

Her research explores how variability in clinical judgments and assessment practices informs educational strategies. Key areas include rater cognition, workplace-based assessment, and navigating dual roles in healthcare. Dr. Gingerich emphasizes the importance of understanding discrepancies in clinical supervision and assessment to improve training outcomes.

Publications highlight innovations in competency-based education, entrustment decisions, and boundary negotiation in overlapping professional/personal roles. She actively contributes to medical education policy and curriculum design.

Dr. Gingerich supervises graduate students in Health Sciences and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to advance rural health education and clinical training practices.
