Sean Maurice

Dr. Sean Maurice is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Medical Sciences at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), where he also serves as Assistant Dean and Assistant Director of Histology for the Northern Medical Program (NMP). He holds an Affiliate Associate Professor position at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in a teaching capacity. His academic background includes a BSc in Kinesiology from the University of Calgary (1999) and a PhD in Dental Science and Extracellular Matrix Remodeling from UBC (2009). He conducted a sabbatical at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (2014) focusing on proteoglycans in breast cancer.

Dr. Maurice’s teaching specialization lies in histopathology within NMP’s pre-clinical curriculum, emphasizing student-centered, participatory learning. He is a 3M National Teaching Fellow (2022), Canada’s highest post-secondary teaching honor. His research focuses on extracellular matrix remodeling in fibrosis/cancer and rural health education. He leads the Healthcare Travelling Roadshow, a provincial initiative since 2010 engaging over 12,000 youth across 68 northern BC communities to address rural healthcare workforce challenges.

His scholarly contributions span medical education pedagogy, rural health systems, and extracellular matrix biology. Key themes include rural healthcare workforce recruitment, interprofessional collaboration, and community engagement strategies. He actively contributes to UNBC’s Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology through workshops and instructional design.
