Prof. Dr. Andrea Bartl holds the Chair of Modern German Literature at the University of Bamberg's Faculty of Humanities and Cultural Studies. Her research focuses on 18th and 20th century literature, contemporary literature, and interdisciplinary cultural studies approaches. She serves as Chair of the Senate (since 2023) and has held numerous leadership positions including Vice Dean of her Faculty and spokesperson for the Bamberg Graduate School.
Her research interests span Enlightenment literature, aesthetic modernism, exile literature, cultural-historical questions, hybrid phenomena (tragicomedy, grotesque, androgyny), material studies (particularly food and picture books), and intermediality (literature, film, TV, visual arts). She is particularly known for her work on picture book analysis, gender studies, and contemporary German literature.
Her recent publications showcase a strong interdisciplinary focus, connecting literary analysis with cultural, social, and material perspectives. Current projects include the Hermann Hesse Handbook (2025), the Illustrators in Residence book series, and research on Kleist's complete works ahead of his 250th birthday in 2027.
