Amy Binder is the SNF-Agora Professor of Sociology at Johns Hopkins University. She has held faculty positions at the University of California San Diego (2003–2023) and the University of Southern California (1998–2003). She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from Northwestern University (1998) and a BA in Anthropology from Stanford University (1986).
Her research focuses on education, politics, culture, and organizational dynamics. She has held leadership roles in academic organizations, including chair of the Sociology of Education section of the American Sociological Association and membership in councils for other ASA sections (OOW, Political Sociology, and Culture). She served as deputy editor for the Sociology of Education journal and on the Academic Advisory Board of the UC National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement.
She chaired the Department of Sociology at UC San Diego (2019–2022) and was elected to the Sociological Research Association in 2021.
