Amory Abbott is an Associate Professor of Illustration at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. He holds a BFA in Illustration from Herron School of Art and Design (Indiana University, 2004) and an MFA in Visual Studies from Pacific Northwest College of Art (2016). His practice integrates eco-theological themes with charcoal landscapes, fantasy comics, and publishing ventures like Fire Season (wildfire art book) and Cauldron Books (amplifying Vancouver comic artists). Teaching emphasizes playful curiosity and rigorous studio practice.
Recent works include the Caldera series exploring fire-adapted conifers, the An Cheathrú Mhór project depicting Irish megalithic sites, and Lost Forever, Still Known – a Glacier National Park eulogy series. His 2023 Terminus: Elkhorn glacier drawing addresses climate change's impact on ecosystems. Residencies in Oregon, Ireland, and Montana have deeply influenced his environmental and archaeological-focused art.
Publications include works in New Farmer’s Almanac and exhibitions at Talon Gallery (Portland). Abbott’s teaching spans courses like Illustration Process: Topics and Professional Applications, reflecting his studio-driven pedagogy. He co-founded the Vancouver Comic Arts Association and maintains active publishing partnerships.
Artistic themes intertwine ecological urgency with mythological narratives, often using charcoal’s materiality to evoke melancholy and transformation. Current projects include the Jemez Springs residency series and ongoing exploration of sacred well sites (Haeligewielle).
