Amanda Lanzillo is a historian specializing in the social histories of Muslim communities in colonial-era South Asia. As of July 2024, she serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago, where she focuses on intersections of labor, migration, and imperial subjecthood.

Her research examines marginalized migrant groups, particularly Afghan laborers in British South and Southeast Asia. Current projects include two book-length studies on Indo-Afghan migration patterns and their impact on imperial governance.
Her 2024 monograph Pious Labor explores Islamic networks and technological adaptation in colonial India. This work, published open-access by University of California Press and Three Essays Collective, forms the foundation of her broader scholarly contributions.
