Althea-Maria Rivas

Althea-Maria Rivas is a Senior Lecturer in Global Development, Peace and Conflict at SOAS University of London's Department of Development Studies. Her research employs feminist and decolonial frameworks to examine humanitarian intervention, post-conflict reconstruction, and everyday violence in Afghanistan, Liberia, and Somalia.

Holds a BA from McGill University, MPA from Concordia University, and PhD in Development Studies from University of Sussex. Previously held positions at University of York and University of Bath.

Research focuses on:

• Intersectionality in aid processes
• Gender-based violence in conflict settings
• Participatory methodologies (photovoice, narrative analysis)
• Race and development praxis

Current projects investigate security-development nexus in East Africa and affective dimensions of peacebuilding. Teaches critical approaches to humanitarianism and conflict transformation.

Convenes MSc programs in Humanitarianism, Aid and Conflict. Supervises doctoral research on decolonizing aid and transitional justice.
