Alison Phipps

Alison Phipps is Professor of Sociology at Newcastle University and honorary Professor at the Centre for Women’s Studies, University of York. Her work focuses on gender, feminist theory, and sexual violence, particularly in the context of racial capitalism and colonialism.

She has authored the book Me, Not You: the trouble with mainstream feminism and is working on Sexual Violence in Racial Capitalism. Phipps develops open-access teaching resources, including syllabi on gender theory, feminist classroom principles, and dissertation guidance, all licensed under Creative Commons. Her research explores intersections of gender-based violence, heteropatriarchy, and systemic oppression, with an emphasis on dismantling oppressive structures.

Her teaching philosophy emphasizes trust, dialogue, and empathy in the classroom, and she collaborates with frontline groups to enhance the ethical and practical relevance of research. Phipps also engages in public scholarship through mini-lecture videos and free downloadable materials.
