Alison Gallagher is a Professor of Public Health Nutrition at the School of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Life & Health Sciences, Ulster University. She serves as the Head of Doctoral College (Coleraine/Magee) and contributes to the Nutrition Innovation Centre for Food and Health (NICHE).
- Education: BSc Hons in Human Nutrition and PhD from Ulster University.
Her research focuses on obesity, disease risk factors, low-energy sweeteners, and physical activity, with a special emphasis on lifestyle interventions across the lifecycle. Recent work includes school-based physical activity programs and the socioeconomic barriers to sport participation during the cost-of-living crisis.
Alison has received multiple honors, including being the first Fellow of the Association of Nutrition on the island of Ireland and serving as Editor-in-Chief for the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society. She leads international initiatives like the European Nutrition Leadership Platform (ENLP) and advises on UK nutrition policy via the Nutrition and Health Claims Committee.
As a mentor, she supervises PhD researchers such as Emma McCay and Omotayo Olojede. Her NICHE lab collaborates with institutions globally, addressing UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health equity and nutrition.
