Alicja Syska is a hybrid academic at the University of Plymouth, serving as a Learning Development Advisor for the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business, alongside roles as a Lecturer in Education and Associate Lecturer in History. Her work bridges academic and pedagogic missions, focusing on enhancing student experience through academic skills development (writing, research, collaboration) and pedagogical innovation. Since 2006, she has led initiatives such as editing the Journal of Learning Development in Higher Education, co-hosting the Learning Development Project podcast, and co-editing books like How to Be a Learning Developer in Higher Education (2023) and Transformative Practice in Higher Education (2025).
Her research emphasizes Learning Development (LD) theory and practice, critical pedagogy, and inclusive education. Supervision includes Ed.D. and Ph.D. students exploring topics like pupil voice and education for displaced people. Teaching spans undergraduate History modules, International EdD programs, and dissertation supervision. She also co-leads the Plymouth Institute of Education Online Journal and advocates for LD as a key sector within higher education.
Publications span LD methodologies, academic writing, and institutional impact, with recent focus on post-pandemic educational transformations and LD's role in fostering equity.
