About
Ali Rana ATILGAN is a Professor at the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Sabanci University, and holds adjunct appointments in the Department of Civil Engineering and Financial Engineering Program at Bogazici University. His research integrates molecular interactions, complex network analysis, and multi-scale modeling with applications in biophysics, materials science, and computational biology.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology (1989)
- M.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology (1987)
- B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering, Istanbul Technical University (1984)
Research Focus:
ATILGAN's work identifies molecular communication pathways and global patterns in complex systems. His group develops computational tools for protein dynamics, antibiotic resistance mechanisms, electrocaloric materials, and network-based predictive models, bridging theoretical insights with engineering applications.
Awards & Honors:
- Graduating Class Awards (Sabanci University: 1st place in 2012/2017; 2nd place in 2016)
- Outstanding Education Prize (Bogazici University, 1999)
- Outstanding Research Prize (Bogazici University, 1998)
- Young Scientist Encouragement Prize (National Science Council, 1995)
- Jefferson Goblet Paper Award (AIAA, 1989)
He leads the MIDST Lab, focusing on molecular interactions and dynamics. His research has been presented at international conferences including the European Conference on Computational Biology and COST Action meetings.
