About
Dr. Alexandre Stewart is a Full Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Ottawa and Director of the Laboratory of Translational Cardiovascular Genomics at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. He holds affiliations with the Ruddy Canadian Cardiovascular Genetics Centre and is a founding member of the international CARDIoGRAMplusC4D consortium, focusing on genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for coronary artery disease (CAD). His research explores genetic and inflammatory mechanisms driving arterial calcification, atherosclerosis, and osteoporosis, aiming to develop therapies targeting these conditions simultaneously. Dr. Stewart has received peer-reviewed funding from organizations including CIHR, NSERC, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
Education: PhD in Anatomy and Organismal Biology from the University of Chicago; MSc in Physiology and BSc in Biology from the University of Ottawa. Postdoctoral training at UCSF in Molecular Cardiology and Cardiovascular Research.
Research Interests: Genetic risk variants in CAD, mitochondrial function, inflammation in cardiovascular pathology, and cross-talk between bone and vascular calcification. He also investigates PTP1B's role in neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, and autism spectrum disorder.
Key Awards: 2014 Investigator of the Year, University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
Grants and Collaborations: Active in the GENIUS-CHD consortium studying post-CHD event risks. His lab has published extensively on IRF2BP2, PCSK9, and 9p21.3 locus mechanisms. Collaborates internationally on GWAS meta-analyses for CAD and related conditions.
