Alexandra Jane Roberts

Alexandra Jane Roberts is a Professor of Law and Media at Northeastern University, holding a joint appointment with the School of Law and the Department of Music within the College of Arts, Media and Design (CAMD). She serves as Faculty Director of the Center for Law, Information and Creativity (CLIC).

Professor Roberts specializes in intellectual property, trademark law, and their intersections with social media and cyberspace. Her work examines trademark use on digital platforms, hashtags as trademarks, and the failure to function doctrine in trademark law. She also engages with law and literature, contributing to interdisciplinary discourse.

In 2023, she received the International Trademark Association’s Ladas Memorial Award for her article 'A Poetics of Trademark Law' in the Berkeley Technology Law Journal. She has been featured in major media outlets such as CNN, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times.

Before joining Northeastern, Roberts served as Executive Director of the Franklin Pierce Center for Intellectual Property at the University of New Hampshire and held roles at Boston University School of Law and Ropes & Gray. She is actively involved in public scholarship and legal commentary, bridging academic research with real-world legal and cultural debates.
