Dr. Alexandra Gerstein is a Curator of Sculpture and Decorative Arts at The Courtauld, part of the University of London. She holds a PhD (2003) and MA (1995) from The Courtauld, specializing in late 19th/early 20th-century Beaux-Arts architecture and Edwardian Baroque Revival sculpture. Prior to her role at The Courtauld, she worked at the Canadian Center for Architecture in Montreal.
Her responsibilities include managing a collection of over 500 objects spanning medieval to early 20th-century sculpture and decorative arts. She leads provenance research for Nazi-era restitution claims and participates in the UK National Museum Directors’ Council Spoliation Working Group. Since 2010, she has spearheaded cataloging and conservation projects, including publications on medieval ivories and Renaissance ceramics.
She curated major exhibitions such as Rodin and Dance: The Essence of Movement (2016) and France in Russia: Empress Josephine’s Malmaison Collection (2008). She co-founded the interdisciplinary 'Illuminating Objects' internship program in 2012, partnering with institutions like Central Saint Martins and Imperial College London. Her work also includes conservation collaborations with West Dean College and the Courtauld Connects refurbishment project (2018–2021).
