Alexander Hinton

Professor Alexander Hinton is a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology, Director of the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights, and UNESCO Chair on Genocide Prevention at Rutgers University.

His research spans three decades examining:

• Patterns of violence in historical and contemporary contexts
• Mechanisms of dehumanization and mass killing
• Post-conflict justice mechanisms including tribunals

Recent publications address rising threats of genocide in the United States and the anthropology of perpetrator behavior. He has received multiple prestigious awards including the 2022 Anthropology in the Media Award, 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Network of Genocide Scholars, and the 2024 HF Guggenheim Distinguished Scholar Award.
