Alexander Gerhard Schwing

Alexander Gerhard Schwing is an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, holding appointments in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science. He is also a W.J. “Jerry” Sanders III - Advanced Micro Devices, Inc Fellow. His research focuses on machine learning, computer vision, and reinforcement learning, with notable contributions to image segmentation, graphical models, and neural networks. Schwing leads interdisciplinary efforts at the Coordinated Science Lab and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA).

His research interests include developing algorithms for efficient human modeling from monocular video, neural network architectures like the Forward-Forward algorithm, and underwater geolocalization using transformers. He has received prestigious awards such as the Amazon Research Award (2019) and the NSF CAREER Award (2021).
