About
Dr. Alex Wadley is an Assistant Professor in Exercise Metabolism at the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Birmingham. He is also an Academy of Medical Sciences Springboard Fellow and Academic Director of the Cellular Health and Metabolism Facility. His research explores the impact of exercise on immunity in clinical populations, including those with type-1 diabetes, lupus, and cancer.
Education:
- BSc in Sport & Exercise Sciences (1st Class Honours), University of Birmingham
- PhD, University of Birmingham
- Post-Doctoral Researcher, Loughborough University (2013–14, 2017–19) and University of Worcester (2014–17)
Research Interests: Dr. Wadley’s work focuses on the intersection of exercise, metabolism, and immune function. He investigates how regular physical activity modulates inflammation and disease progression in autoimmune conditions. His current clinical trials examine remotely monitored exercise interventions in type-1 diabetes and lupus, and intra-apheresis cycling to improve stem cell donation outcomes. His research bridges clinical application with mechanistic physiology.
Publication Trends: His recent publications emphasize clinical exercise interventions, immune cell dynamics, inflammation modulation, and feasibility studies in chronic diseases. Topics include hematopoietic stem cell mobilization, monocyte behavior, and immune checkpoint molecules in response to exercise.
Scientific Awards:
- Academy of Medical Sciences Springboard Fellowship
Advising and Grants: Dr. Wadley supervises multiple PhD and Master’s students. He leads projects funded by the Academy of Medical Sciences, Lupus UK, and Rosetrees Trust, focusing on exercise interventions in autoimmune diseases. He actively mentors early-career researchers and contributes to academic training through teaching and supervision.
Labs and Teams: He leads a research group conducting clinical trials and is Academic Director of the Cellular Health and Metabolism Facility at the University of Birmingham, supporting interdisciplinary research in metabolism and cellular health.
