Dr. Alex Hall is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of York. Her research focuses on the securitisation of mobility, border politics, and the ethics of algorithmic decision-making in security contexts. She has conducted ethnographic studies of UK immigration removal centers and explores the rise of security volunteers/vigilantes in Europe and the UK. Her work is supported by grants from the British Academy and the University of York's Justice and Equality theme.
Her research interests include critical security studies, data technologies in border governance, and the governance of mobility. Current projects investigate discretion in algorithmic security decisions and the role of volunteers in border security. She leads the White Rose Collaboration Network on 'Europe, Migration and the New Politics of (In)security.'
Dr. Hall teaches modules on 'New Security Challenges' and 'Border Politics' at the undergraduate level. She has supervised PhD students on topics ranging from social media's impact on mental health to strategic cultures in the Fergana Valley.
Her research outputs include 14 peer-reviewed articles and books chapters, focusing on detention ethics, border technologies, and cosmopolitan morality. She has presented at international conferences and serves on academic boards, including the University of Ottawa advisory panel.
