Dr. Alex Crawford serves as the Assistant Dean of Student Success and an Instructor of History at Ave Maria University. He holds a B.A. in History from Ave Maria University (2013), an M.Litt. in Medieval and Early Modern Studies from the University of Aberdeen (2014), and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Aberdeen (2019).
His research focuses on the Scottish comital milieus and elite power dynamics within the Scottish kingdom from David I to Alexander II (1124–1249). He is currently completing a monograph examining earls' governmental roles in Scotland during this period. His teaching interests include medieval warfare, medieval court culture, medievalism, and the influence of medieval art and mythology on J.R.R. Tolkien's works.
Dr. Crawford is a member of the Society of Scottish Medievalists and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. He has presented at numerous conferences, including the International Congress on Medieval Studies (2024) and the Haskins Conference (2023).
He has organized academic events such as the “Political Community: Historical Perspectives” conference (2016) and the Northeast Postgraduate History Conference (2016). His work integrates quantitative approaches and digital humanities methods in medieval historical analysis.
