Dr. Iain MacInnes is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Dean for Humanities and Applied Social Science at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), affiliated with the Centre for History. He holds a PhD from the University of Aberdeen (2008), following MA and MPhil degrees from the University of Glasgow. His research focuses on medieval Scottish political and military history, particularly the Second Scottish Wars of Independence (1332–1357), Anglo-Scottish relations, and the portrayal of medieval themes in modern media such as graphic novels and podcasts.
Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and postgraduate modules on Scottish history, medieval warfare, and the Hundred Years’ War. He supervises three PhD students and has contributed to peer-reviewed journals like Northern Scotland and Scottish Historical Review. His monograph Scotland’s Second War of Independence, 1332-1357 (2016) and numerous articles explore topics ranging from noblewomen’s roles in conflict to the depiction of medieval history in popular culture.
MacInnes actively engages with public scholarship through podcasts such as Scotichronicast and BBC Radio programs, discussing Scottish history and medievalism. He serves on the board of trustees for Northern Scotland and has published widely on chivalry, rebellion dynamics, and the intersection of medieval studies with modern media.
