About
Alessandro Silvano is a NERC Independent Research Fellow at the University of Southampton's Department of Ocean and Earth Science. His research focuses on the Southern Ocean’s role in global climate systems, particularly how ocean processes influence sea level, heat, and carbon dynamics. He holds a PhD in Quantitative Marine Science from the University of Tasmania and CSIRO (2015–2019), a Master’s in Physics of Complex Systems from the University of Turin (2012–2014), and a Bachelor’s in Physics from the same institution (2009–2012).
His work spans interdisciplinary projects like the 'Control of Earth’s climate by the polar Southern Ocean' and 'Antarctic Salinity' (funded by the European Space Agency). Key research areas include Antarctic Bottom Water dynamics, ice shelf melting, and Southern Ocean circulation. Supervising two PhD students (Isabelle White and Arianna Ferrotti), he contributes to international collaborations through initiatives like the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute and the Physical Oceanography research group.
