Alberto Carpinteri is a Professor at the Politecnico di Torino, Italy, holding the Chair of Structural Mechanics. He has served as Head of the Department of Structural Engineering (1989–1995) and Director of the Post-graduate School of Structural Engineering since 1990. His leadership roles include President of the National Research Institute of Metrology (INRIM, 2011–2013), International Congress on Fracture (ICF, 2009–2013), and European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS, 2002–2006). He is a Fellow of numerous academies, including the European Academy of Sciences and the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Dr. Carpinteri earned Doctoral Degrees in Nuclear Engineering (1976) and Mathematics (1981) from the University of Bologna. His research focuses on fracture mechanics, reinforced concrete, and nanomaterials. He directs the Fracture Mechanics Laboratory and serves as Editor-in-Chief of Meccanica. His over 750 publications include 300+ peer-reviewed papers and 43 books, with an h-index of 31.
Notable awards include the Griffith Medal (ESIS, 2008) and the Inaugural Paul Paris Gold Medal (ICF, 2013). He has held visiting roles at Lehigh University and editorial roles in 13 international journals. His work spans structural integrity, material fatigue, and piezonuclear reactions, contributing to both theoretical and applied mechanics.
