Alberto Cairo is a Professor and Knight Chair in Visual Journalism at the School of Communication, University of Miami. He directs the Center for Visualization, Data Communication & Information Design at UM’s Institute for Data Science and Computing, and serves as a Faculty Fellow at the Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy.
- Specializes in data visualization, infographics, and visual journalism
- Author of three seminal books: How Charts Lie, The Truthful Art, and The Functional Art
- Developed the first journalism MOOC in 2012, reaching 30,000+ participants
- Former director of Infographics and Multimedia at Editora Globo (Brazil) and Interactive Infographics Department at El Mundo (Spain)
His research focuses on visual communication ethics, hurricane risk visualization, and information design. His work has been recognized with the Sigma Data Journalism Award (2019) and multiple Malofiej/SND international awards for infographics excellence.
