Albert Kraler is an Assistant Professor in Migration Studies at the University for Continuing Education Krems, affiliated with the Department for Migration and Globalisation and the Center for Migration and Globalisation Research. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Vienna, with additional academic training in African Studies. Prior to his academic role, he served as a senior researcher and research unit leader at the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) in Vienna.
His research focuses on migration governance, asylum policy, irregular migration, forced displacement, and the socio-economic integration of migrants. He leads or co-leads major projects such as the EU-funded MIrreM (measuring irregular migration) and TRAFIG (protracted displacement dynamics). He is also Programme Manager for the PhD Programme in Migration Studies and a member of the IMISCOE Board.
Key areas of study include multilevel migration policy analysis, the impact of regularization programs, and transnational displacement networks. His recent work emphasizes data-driven policymaking and the ethical dimensions of border control. Kraler collaborates with institutions globally, including the European University Institute and Oxford University, and contributes to policy dialogues through publications like Policy-relevant migration research: how to create impact (2024).
He has held visiting lecturer roles at the University of Vienna and Technical University Vienna, and his research outputs span peer-reviewed journals, policy briefs, and edited volumes. Ongoing projects address topics such as EU asylum system evaluation and climate-induced migration responses.
