State University of New York at BuffaloAbout
Akhter Nasrin is an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University at Buffalo (UB). She holds a PhD in Computer Science from George Mason University (2020), an M.S. from the University of Dhaka (2007), and a B.Sc. in Computer Science (2005). Her research focuses on Machine Learning applications in Computational Biology, particularly protein structure prediction and energy landscape analysis.
Dr. Nasrin’s work emphasizes machine learning techniques such as non-negative matrix factorization, anomaly detection, and deep learning for protein structure decoy selection. She has contributed to methods integrating Markov state models and unsupervised learning to analyze molecular dynamics data. Her research has been recognized with a Best Paper Award at BICOB 2019.
Teaching duties include courses like CSE 199 (UB Seminar), CSE 191 (Discrete Structures), and advanced topics in algorithms and data mining. Previously, she taught at George Mason University and worked as a research intern at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Her service includes reviewing for journals like IEEE/ACM TCBB and conferences such as SBP-BRiMS. She has also developed frameworks for forecasting gang-related homicides using multi-task learning.
