Adrian del Rio Rodriguez

Adrian del Rio Rodriguez is an MSCA postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Political Science, University of Oslo, with additional affiliations as a visiting scholar at Uppsala University. Previously, he held a Humboldt postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute for East European and International Studies (ZOIS) and was a postdoctoral fellow at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center in the Research Area Dynamics of Political Systems. He received his Ph.D. in Social and Political Science from the European University Institute in May 2020.

Dr. Rodriguez's research focuses on elite politics, authoritarianism, electoral autocracies, regime change, and education policies. His largest project examines divisions within ruling elites in electoral autocracies (dictatorships that hold multiparty elections), providing novel theory and data to explain strains within authoritarian governments and defectors' contributions to regime change. He is currently writing a book manuscript on elite defections in electoral autocracies while collaborating with ERC-funded projects on education and politics at the University of Oslo and Glasgow.

His research has resulted in numerous publications analyzing political systems, elite behavior in authoritarian contexts, and education policies across modern history. Rodriguez's work demonstrates a consistent focus on understanding political dynamics in non-democratic systems and the factors that contribute to political change. His methodological approach combines comparative analysis with innovative data collection and matching techniques.
