Worcester Polytechnic InstituteAbout
Aaron R. Sakulich is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental, & Architectural Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), where he conducts research on sustainable and durable construction materials. He is the Site Director for WPI's IQP/MQP programs in Panama City and Reykjavik, promoting global project-based learning.
Education:
- BS, Drexel University, 2005
- PhD, Drexel University, 2010
His research focuses on developing advanced materials for infrastructure, particularly geopolymer composites and engineered cementitious composites (ECC), aiming to reduce environmental impact and maintenance needs. He has a strong interest in appropriate technology for developing nations and cultural heritage preservation, inspired by his time as a Fulbright grantee in Morocco. His work supports UN Sustainable Development Goals such as SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, Infrastructure) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
The recent publications reflect a consistent focus on material durability, nano-characterization, and sustainable alternatives to conventional concrete. His work bridges fundamental materials science with practical civil engineering applications.
Scientific Awards and Recognitions:
- Fulbright Grantee (Morocco)
He serves on the Editorial Board of Cement and Concrete Composites and is Associate Editor for the ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering. He co-invented a patent on improving the lifespan of steel-reinforced concrete structures by 300%. While no current advisees are listed, his leadership in international project centers suggests active mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students.
He leads research initiatives related to sustainable materials and infrastructure resilience, with connections to global development projects such as those in Ethiopia. His labs and teams likely focus on materials testing, microscopy, and field applications of sustainable construction technologies.
