Šarūnas Raudys (born February 24, 1941, Kaunas) is a Lithuanian computer scientist and Professor at Vilnius University since 1985. He currently leads the Computational Intelligence Research Group and previously served as Head of the Data and Analysis Department at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics (1980–2010). His international collaborations include appointments at the University of Michigan, Delft University of Technology, University of Paris, and Nanjing University.
His educational background includes:
- Graduation from Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (1963)
- Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematics (1979)
- Habilitation in Physics
Raudys pioneered research on the interplay between recognition method complexity, experimental data volume, and accuracy, establishing foundational links between multivariate statistics and neural networks. His work focuses on developing classification and prediction rules through statistical and neural approaches, significantly advancing pattern recognition theory and data-driven modeling techniques in machine learning.
His major awards include:
- Prize of the Council of Ministers of the Lithuanian SSR (1987)
- Lithuanian Science Prize (2003)
He has authored seminal books including Statistical and Neural Classifiers (2001) and Knowledge Extraction from Data (2008), and published over 100 scientific articles. His Computational Intelligence Research Group at Vilnius University drives innovation in classification systems and data analysis methodologies.
