Dr. Áine Aventin is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Queen’s University Belfast. She specializes in complex behavioral intervention development for global challenges in sexual and reproductive health, maternal mental health, and pregnancy loss. Her leadership roles include Chair of the Northern Ireland Pregnancy Loss Research and Policy Network and Principal Investigator of the PRESENT study on parental trauma and grief following pregnancy loss. Dr. Aventin’s research spans international collaborations, including projects in South Africa, Lesotho, and the UK, focusing on gender-transformative interventions and adolescent health.
Her research interests include maternal and child health, mental health, and global health equity, with a particular focus on interventions addressing pregnancy loss, perinatal mental health, and relationships and sexuality education. Dr. Aventin has secured significant funding, including £1.7M from the UK National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) for the JACK Trial, evaluating film-based interventions for teenage sexual health.
Teaching responsibilities include coordinating modules on public health, chronic healthcare needs, and quality improvement in nursing. She supervises PhD students researching pregnancy loss, infertility, and intimate partner violence. Awards include the Vice-Chancellor’s Fellowship (2018) and the Martha McMenamin Memorial Scholarship (2024).
Key projects include the PRESENT study, the INVOLVE_FP systematic review on family planning interventions, and the If I Were Thabo trial in Southern Africa. She also leads initiatives to improve nursing education on pregnancy loss and collaborates on global health policy through networks like the Northern Ireland Pregnancy Loss Research and Policy Network.
