Simona Di Martino is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Department of French and Italian within the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin. She earned her PhD in Italian Studies from the University of Warwick (UK) and previously held postdoctoral positions at the University of Toronto and research fellowships at the Universities of Warwick, London, Leeds, and Reading. Dr. Di Martino's research focuses on girlhood studies, comics and periodical studies, transnational and transmedia studies, reception studies, and Gothic literature. Her work examines the teenage witch as an empowering trope for girls from a transnational perspective, with current research spanning from the 1950s to today across magazines, comics, novels, and screen media from Anglo-American, Irish, Italian, and Japanese contexts. She is particularly interested in reception research and audience responses and fandom. Her scholarly output includes publications in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes, with a forthcoming monograph on Italian Gothic Enlightenment (Liverpool University Press) and an edited collection entitled 'Constructing British and Italian Girlhood through Literary and Visual Narratives' (Berghahn, Transnational Girlhood Series). Her research on W.I.T.C.H. magazine (2001-2012) published by Disney Italia represents a significant contribution to transnational girlhood studies. Twice awarded the Warwick Award for Teaching Excellence Organized 15+ international conferences including 'Women and Periodicals in Italy' (AAIS 2025) and 'Youth in Comics' (CAIS 2025) Designed and hosted an Italian language learning podcast at Warwick Dr. Di Martino teaches courses including 'From Little Women to W.I.T.C.H.' (cross-listed as Comparative Literature 382 and Women's and Gender Studies 393), 'Intermediate Italian,' and 'Intro to Italian Literature,' bringing her research expertise directly into the classroom while making Italian language and culture accessible to students at all levels.
