Professor Tomasz Komornicki is a distinguished academic serving as Head of the Department of Spatial Development at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) and as Professor at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University. He has held significant leadership roles including Deputy Director of IGiPZ PAN for Scientific Affairs (2010-2017) and has been instrumental in numerous national and international research projects focused on spatial development and transport geography. His research interests span transport geography, political geography, spatial planning, transport policy, cohesion policy, and accessibility modeling using potential and gravity models. Komornicki's work particularly emphasizes international socio-economic connections, border studies, and regional development patterns in Poland and Europe. His extensive publication record reveals consistent focus on spatial accessibility, transport infrastructure impacts, border dynamics, and EU cohesion policy. Recent work (2023-2025) demonstrates increasing attention to refugee flows, pandemic mobility impacts, and advanced accessibility modeling techniques across European regions. 2000 Scientific Award of the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Mining Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences named after Eugeniusz Romer Komornicki has led or participated in over 50 major research projects including ESPON initiatives, BT 2050, IMAGINE, COMPASS, and numerous national projects analyzing transport infrastructure, spatial planning, and regional development. His work bridges academic research and practical policy implementation through collaborations with regional governments and EU institutions. He directs the Department of Spatial Development at PAN, which focuses on theoretical-methodological foundations of spatial development, accessibility and mobility as bases for transport policy, and spatial planning systems in Europe.
