Frank Pazzaglia is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Lehigh University. His research focuses on understanding landscape evolution through the integration of field observations, geomorphic analysis, and numerical modeling. He has extensive research experience in the Appalachians, the Rockies, the Apennines, and central Asia, particularly Mongolia. His educational background includes: B.S. in Geosciences from Penn State University (1986) M.S. in Geology from the University of New Mexico (1989) Ph.D. in Geosciences from Penn State University (1993) NSF Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at Yale University (1994) Professor Pazzaglia's research interests span long-term landscape evolution, tectonic and climatic drivers of geomorphic processes, and autogenic processes encoded in deposits and landforms. His work increasingly incorporates numeric landscape evolution modeling, including base level fall histories from inversions of fluvial topography. He has developed expertise in low-enthalpy geothermal resource exploration and enhanced mineral weathering for carbon capture, utilization, and storage. His field areas include the Appalachians, the Rockies, the Apennines, and central Asia (particularly Mongolia), where he investigates the coupling of deep Earth and surface processes at plate boundaries and continental interiors. His research methodology integrates geologic mapping, river terrace analysis, sedimentary petrography, thermochronology, and paleomagnetic-based age models. Professor Pazzaglia's recent publications demonstrate expertise across several interconnected fields: geomorphology, tectonics, paleomagnetism, and environmental change. His work frequently employs innovative methodologies including paleomagnetic and rock-magnetic cyclostratigraphy, anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) analysis, and numerical landscape evolution modeling. Key research themes include landscape response to tectonic forcing, climate-environment interactions preserved in sedimentary archives, and applications of geomorphic analysis to understanding active tectonics in both plate boundary and intraplate settings. His scientific recognition includes: NSF Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at Yale University Professor Pazzaglia has mentored numerous students who have developed projects incorporating Terrestrial Cosmogenic Nuclide (TCN) and Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating techniques.
