Xiao-Jun Wang is a Professor of Physics at Georgia Southern University, where he has been conducting research since 1995. His academic career spans multiple institutions, including postdoctoral work at the University of California-Irvine as an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow. Wang holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Georgia (1992), an M.S. in Physics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (1985) and Florida Institute of Technology (1987), and a B.S. in Physics from Jilin University (1982). Wang's research focuses on the optical properties of rare earth and transition metals doped phosphor materials, with particular emphasis on LED phosphors and persistent phosphors. His work spans the electromagnetic spectrum from ultraviolet to infrared, investigating dynamical processes of excited states and applications in illumination and biomedical imaging. He has established multiple research laboratories including the Luminescence Research Lab, Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Lab, and Biophysics Lab, where he trains undergraduate students. His publication record includes over 300 scientific papers with more than 14,000 citations and an h-index of 61. Wang has co-edited three volumes of the 'Phosphor Handbook' and has served as editor for prestigious journals including Light: Science and Applications (Nature) and Materials Research Bulletin (Elsevier). He has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Physical Society for his contributions to the field. Wang's research group has made significant contributions to understanding luminescence mechanisms, developing new phosphor materials, and creating applications in optical thermometry and biomedical imaging. His recent work shows a strong trend toward bifunctional materials that combine photothermal conversion with temperature sensing capabilities, particularly for deep tissue applications. Fellow of American Physical Society Over 300 publications with 14,000+ citations h-index of 61 Three edited volumes of 'Phosphor Handbook' Editor for Light: Science and Applications (Nature) Professor Wang actively mentors undergraduate students in his research labs and has numerous collaborations with institutions including Oak Ridge National Laboratory, The University of Georgia, CIOMP of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Northeast Normal University in China. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in the areas of clean energy and sustainable cities.
