Professor Martin Hummel is a vocal performance faculty member at the University of Music Würzburg, specializing in singing instruction. He has served in significant administrative roles at the institution, including spokesperson for the singing department from 2006 to 2017 and vice president from 2017 to 2021. Martin Hummel was born in Freiburg im Breisgau and comes from a family of musicians. He received his vocal training in Würzburg and at the Scola Cantorum Basiliensis with Kurt Widmer and René Jacobs. His artistic development was significantly influenced by encounters with notable musicians including Margreet Honig, Peter Schreier, and Hans Hotter. Professor Hummel's primary research and performance interests focus on vocal performance, particularly Renaissance and Baroque works. His expertise spans classical singing techniques, music interpretation, and vocal pedagogy. As a performer, he has specialized in historically informed performance practices, working with renowned conductors such as René Jacobs, Michel Piquet, Gabriel Garrido, and Reinhard Goebel. Throughout his career, Professor Hummel has maintained an active performance schedule, presenting recitals and concerts across Europe, Asia, and the USA. He has participated in numerous world premieres and his work has been documented through radio and CD productions that showcase key elements of his diverse repertoire. As an educator, Professor Hummel has been passionate about vocal teaching since his student days. He has mentored numerous students at the Würzburg University of Music and Performing Arts and through various specialized courses. His teaching philosophy reflects the influences of his own mentors and emphasizes both technical excellence and artistic expression.
