Karin Nordin is a licensed psychologist and Professor of Caring Sciences at the Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences, Uppsala University. She serves in dual roles within the department: in Administration and in the Public Health, Working Life and Rehabilitation division. Her research primarily focuses on exercise interventions during cancer treatment and their effects on quality of life, fatigue management, and physical outcomes. She leads the international Phys-Can project, a major collaborative effort examining physical training and cancer outcomes. Dr. Nordin's research interests span cancer rehabilitation, exercise oncology, psychosocial aspects of cancer, quality of life research, and fatigue management. Her work uniquely bridges psychological support with physical exercise interventions for cancer patients. She has also conducted significant research on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients and their families, examining anxiety, depression, and coping mechanisms throughout the disease trajectory. Her earlier work included studies on genetic counseling psychology and patient decision-making. Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong focus on longitudinal exercise interventions during and after cancer treatment, particularly examining how different exercise intensities affect physical and psychological outcomes. Her Phys-Can project represents a comprehensive approach to understanding exercise adherence, physiological changes, cost-effectiveness, and quality of life improvements. The research increasingly incorporates biomarker analysis to understand mechanisms behind exercise benefits and employs sophisticated statistical methods to examine moderators of treatment response. As principal investigator of the Phys-Can project, Dr. Nordin leads a major international collaboration involving researchers from Uppsala University, Lund University, Linköping University in Sweden, the University of Agder and Bergen in Norway, University of Copenhagen in Denmark, The Netherlands Cancer Institute, VU University Medical Centre, University of Amsterdam, and University of Leeds in the UK. Her work has established important evidence for integrating structured exercise programs into standard cancer care protocols. Dr. Nordin's laboratory and research team operate within the Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences, focusing on translational research that bridges clinical practice with scientific investigation. The Phys-Can project team includes experts in exercise physiology, oncology, psychology, and health economics working together to develop evidence-based exercise recommendations for cancer patients. Their community-based approach ensures research findings can be practically implemented in real-world healthcare settings.
