Tapani Viitala is a Professor in Novel Drug Formulations at Åbo Akademi University and the University of Helsinki, with a shared appointment since September 2021. He serves as group leader of the Pharmaceutical Biophysics research group at the University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Pharmacy and is a member of Åbo Akademi’s BioNanoMaterials group. His expertise bridges pharmaceutical surface chemistry, biophysics, and nanotechnology, contributing to health-related solutions aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals. Åbo Akademi University: Doctoral education in Physical Chemistry (1999) University of Helsinki: Senior Researcher (2010), Academy of Finland Research Fellow (2010–2015), University Lecturer (2018) His research focuses on label-free physico-chemical techniques like surface plasmon resonance, quartz crystal microbalance, and time-resolved Raman spectroscopy to study drug and nanoparticle interactions with living cells and model surfaces. Key projects include NAP4DIVE (Non-Animal Blood-Brain Barrier Delivery Platform), EU PII (Printed Intelligence Infrastructure), and MADNESS (Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions). Recent work includes collaborations on enzyme delivery, chronic wound healing, and cancer therapies. He actively hosts academic visitors and co-leads interdisciplinary projects with institutions across Europe.
