Sebastian van Strien is a Professor and Chair in Dynamical Systems at the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Imperial College London. His research focuses on Dynamical Systems, with emphasis on low-dimensional dynamics, applications to economics, and complex systems. He leads the Dynamical Systems group and is affiliated with the CNRS-Imperial Abraham de Moivre UMI. His work spans pure and applied mathematics, including contributions to renormalization theory, entropy dynamics, and network analysis. He has supervised numerous PhD students and holds an ERC Advanced Grant. Key publications include studies on coupled maps, holomorphic dynamics, and entropy monotonicity. His research bridges theoretical foundations with real-world applications in networks and economic models. Research interests include nonlinear dynamics , chaos theory , and interdisciplinary applications. Notable contributions include work on universality in period-doubling, transversality in hyperbolic systems, and data-driven analysis of critical transitions. He collaborates internationally, organizing conferences such as the International conference in honor of Jean-Marc Gambaudo . His monograph One-Dimensional Dynamics (with Welington de Melo) remains a foundational text in the field. Current projects explore sparse network dynamics and quasiconformal rigidity.
