Miia Mäkelä is a Docent and Researcher in Microbiology at the University of Helsinki, affiliated with the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS) and the Doctoral Programme in Microbiology and Biotechnology. Her research focuses on plant biomass degradation by filamentous fungi, with emphasis on fungal physiology, molecular genetics, and enzymology for sustainable biotechnology solutions. Research Interests: Sugar transport in fungi, genome editing tools, carbon/aromatic metabolism, and biomass valorization through fungal systems. Teaching: Offers bachelor's courses in Finnish (microbiology, fungal biology) and master's courses in English (advanced microbiology, fungal biotechnology, forest microbiology). Key Collaborations: Partnerships with institutions like Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute, Technical University of Delft, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Concordia University. Supervises 15+ PhD/MSc students and leads major projects including MYCOFACT (Novo Nordisk Foundation) and METAFUNG (Academy of Finland). Scientific Awards: Best Poster Award (2018) HiLIFE Fellow (2023-2025) Academy of Finland Research Fellow (2017-2022) Recent Research Trends: The 15 most recent articles highlight advancements in fungal genomics, sugar transporter characterization, laccase discovery via machine learning, and comparative studies between ascomycete/basidiomycete fungi. Subfields span from molecular mechanisms to industrial enzyme applications.
