Prof. Dr. Massimo Lopes is a Full Professor and Chair of the Board of Directors at the Institute of Molecular Cancer Research, University of Zurich. His research focuses on DNA replication stress, genome instability, and their role in cancer development and therapy. He has held various academic positions at the University of Zurich since 2005, including SNF Assistant Professor, Assistant Professor, and Associate Professor, before his current role since 2023. He also coordinates the Master in Cancer Biology program. Education: M.S. in Biology, University of Milano, Italy (1992-1997) Ph.D. in Genetics, University of Milano (1997-2000) His work explores replication fork dynamics, transcription-replication conflicts, and mechanisms of replication stress-induced tumorigenesis using molecular biology, cell biology, and single-molecule approaches. He investigates nuclear responses to replication stress and its implications for stem cells and tissues. His publications reveal trends in DNA replication, repair mechanisms, and cancer biology, with keywords spanning Molecular Biology, Genetics, and Genomics. Scientific Awards: 2001 AGI Award 2002 HFSP Fellowship 2002 SIBBM Award 2002 Premio Cecilia Cioffrese 2003 Charles Rodolphe Brupbacher Award 2005 Roche Fellowship 2006 Ernst Th. Jucker Award 2007 SNSF Professorship 2012 EMBO Young Investigator 2013 Götz Prize 2013 ERC Consolidator Grant 2017 WBW Young Investigator Award He has advised numerous PhD and MSc students, including Andrea Sanchi, Veronica Cherdyntseva, and Tristan Gasparetto. Collaborations span institutions like IRB (USI), CEDC (Université Paris Cité), and King's College London. Labs and Teams: The Lopes Lab at University of Zurich investigates replication stress, nuclear dynamics, and cancer mechanisms, with active projects in replication fork remodeling, transcription conflicts, and DNA repair. Social events include lab retreats, summer outings, and collaborative workshops.
