Hilary Bergsieker is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Waterloo. Her research focuses on intergroup dynamics, trust in diverse relationships, and the propagation of stereotypes through communication. She holds a BA from Stanford University and MA/PhD from Princeton University. Her work addresses challenges in multicultural societies, including how trust is maintained in intergroup relationships and how covert stereotypes persist through language. Her research interests span social psychology topics such as impression management, nonverbal behavior, and gender/racial inequalities. Key areas include examining how racial attitudes shape friendships among minorities and the impact of parental leave policies on gender norms across 37 countries. She leads the Diversity and Intergroup Relations Lab and has published extensively in journals like Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and American Psychologist . Dr. Bergsieker’s recent work explores STEM inclusivity, including gender gaps in parental leave intentions and strategies to foster gender-equitable workplace cultures. She collaborates internationally and has contributed chapters to books like Applications of Social Psychology .
