Dr. Tariq Siddique is an Associate Professor in the Department of Renewable Resources at the University of Alberta, specializing in Environmental Soil Science and Environmental Microbiology. His research focuses on biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons, microbial community dynamics, and biogeochemical processes in oil sands tailings. He is affiliated with the Land Reclamation International Graduate School (LRIGS) program sponsored by NSERC CREATE. Dr. Siddique holds a PhD in Soil Microbiology & Biochemistry from the University of California, Riverside and University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, alongside MSc and BSc degrees in Soil Science from the latter. His education includes advanced training in soil chemistry, environmental science, and microbial ecology. His research interests span trace metal biotransformation, anaerobic hydrocarbon degradation pathways, and methanogenesis suppression in tailings. He develops keratin-based sorbents for wastewater treatment and investigates soil moisture conservation in agricultural systems. His work bridges environmental engineering and microbiology to address industrial contamination challenges. Key contributions include modeling biogeochemical processes in oil sands tailings, understanding microbial redox interactions with minerals, and advancing bio-based remediation technologies. His recent studies explore microbial-mineral synergies in methane production and sustainable sorbent materials.
