Jeffrey I Hunt is Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University's Alpert Medical School. He serves as Program Director for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship and the Combined Program in Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Hunt is also Deputy Division Director for the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Director of Inpatient and Intensive Services at Bradley Hospital. Dr. Hunt earned his BA from Carroll College (Magna cum laude), an MS in Biology from Montana State University, and his MD from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed his general and child and adolescent psychiatry residency training at the Medical College of Pennsylvania/Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute (now Drexel University). Dr. Hunt's research focuses on pediatric mood disorders, suicidal behavior, and psychiatric training and education. His work has significantly contributed to understanding bipolar disorder in youth, with particular emphasis on cognitive flexibility, mood symptoms, and suicidal ideation in children and adolescents. His research spans clinical assessment, intervention development, and longitudinal studies tracking the course of psychiatric disorders from childhood through adulthood. He has been instrumental in developing psychosocial interventions for adolescent psychiatric inpatients and has explored the relationship between social media use, sleep, and psychopathology in hospitalized adolescents. Analysis of Dr. Hunt's recent publications reveals a strong focus on pediatric bipolar disorder, with particular attention to longitudinal outcomes, cognitive factors, and comorbid conditions. His work frequently examines the relationship between cognitive flexibility and mood symptoms, as well as suicidal behavior in youth. More recently, his research has expanded to include LGBTQ+ mental health, digital psychiatry (particularly social media effects), and innovative psychosocial interventions for inpatient settings. Dr. Hunt has received numerous scientific awards and honors including: Cancro Academic Leadership Award from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (2019) Dean's Excellence in Teaching Award from Alpert Medical School of Brown University (2019) Outstanding Mentor Award from the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (2018) Distinguished Fellow of both the American Psychiatric Association and American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Multiple teaching awards spanning from 2000 to present As a co-investigator on significant research grants including the NIMH-funded Course and Outcome of Bipolar Youth study and the current Predicting Adult Outcomes in Bipolar Youth (PROBY) study, Dr. Hunt has secured substantial funding for child and adolescent psychiatric research. He serves on national committees including the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). Additionally, he is the Senior Editor of the Brown Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology Newsletter. Dr. Hunt leads the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Brown University, directing inpatient and intensive services at Bradley Hospital. His leadership extends to program development for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship and the Combined Program in Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, where he has implemented innovative educational approaches including maintenance of certification products for residency training.
