Charlotte Melander is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Social Work, University of Gothenburg, where she has been working as a lecturer and researcher since completing her PhD in 2009. Her academic career focuses on the intersection of migration, family dynamics, and social work practice, particularly examining transnational social contexts and care systems for migrant children and families. Her educational background includes: PhD in Social Work from Gothenburg University (2009) Bachelor degree in Social Work from Lund University (1997) Charlotte's research primarily investigates migrant families and their children within transnational social contexts. She examines care and social support systems within migrant families both locally and across borders, with particular attention to unaccompanied children in the Gothenburg region and children serving as young carers in Sweden. Her methodological approach often combines qualitative interviews with visual techniques to explore the complex social worlds of migrant children and families. Her extensive publication record demonstrates consistent focus on transnational childhood experiences, with recent work examining language brokering as care, transnational friendships, and the role of religious communities in migrant integration. The research consistently employs innovative visual methodologies and focuses on Central and Eastern European migration to Sweden, particularly from Poland and Romania. Charlotte actively participates in multiple research networks, including the Nordic research network 'Significant Others' funded by NOS-HS, the Global Childhood Research Network, and the Swedish Network for Family and Kinship Studies. She coordinates a local network of researchers and social workers focused on social work and migration at Gothenburg University and University West, and is connected to the Centre of Global Migration at Gothenburg University. She currently teaches at both bachelor and master levels, with courses focusing on social work and migration, family dynamics, children and parenting, antiracist social work, and transnational perspectives on families. She supervises students at all academic levels, from bachelor to PhD, and has been involved in multiple research projects funded by organizations including FORTE and the Swedish Research Council.
